Your Cans Can Help. . .

The Auburn Food Bank is looking at empty shelves and several local food banks are in danger of closing!  Your canned (or other non-perishables) goods can help local families with a basic life necessity--food.  A collection bin has been delivered to the administrative annex (502 4th Street Northeast) and your pantry items and/or cash or checks (payable to the Auburn Food Bank) are greatly needed and appreciated.  If you send Deyanna a check, remember it tax deductible--every donation helps!  Deyanna King (at the annex) is willing to accept monetary donations.  Pantry items may be dropped off at the annex between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Donate Blood--Save a Life--November 25 at West Auburn High School

Contact Steven Payne (253-931-4990) to reserve your time to save a life.  The single pint of blood you donate helps change the lives of three patients including those recovering from cancer, burns, and/or major trauma.

To make your donation experience as easy as possible, follow these steps (recommended by the Puget Sound Blood Center):

  • Eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of fluids at least four hours prior to donating.
  • When you arrive to donate, complete a health history questionnaire and participate in a brief screening interview.
  • A professional from the Puget Sound Blood Center will check your blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and iron level to help assure you are well enough to donate.
  • Lay down and relax while a unit (about a pint) of blood is collected.
  • Remain in the "canteen" area for about ten minutes after donating. . . have a cookie (or crackers) and something to drink before returning to work, class, home, or continuing on your day filled with errands and activities.

Thank you to those of you who have donated in the past; new (first-time) donors are always welcome!

Randy Dorn Elected Superintendent of Public Instruction
George Dockins Appointed Executive Director of PSE

Thanks to everyone who voted November 4.  Randy Dorn will be sworn into office in January; until that time, he will serve in an advisory capacity to the newly appointed PSE Executive Director, George Dockins.  Dockins has served on the Public School Employees board for nine years (three of those years as president).  With George's appointment as executive director, former PSE Vice-president, Judi Owens will now serve as president.

At a time when significant changes are taking place, leaders with exceptional skills and commitment to the people they represent is important.  These newly selected leaders will fill the shoes and step up to launch PSE into a future of meeting challenges.  George Dockins extended his appreciation to Randy Dorn and acknowledged, ". . . all the energy and leadership he devoted to PSE."  Dockins added, "Randy deserves enormous credit for where PSE is today."  George Dockins has the support of the entire PSE Board of Directors and newly appointed President, Judi Owens, said, "George is the very best choice for PSE at this time when we have great challenges ahead."  Owens noted Dockins' ability to motivate members to become involved (at the local and state levels) at important.

In January, PSE will conduct an election to fill the vacant vice president position.  All PSE members in good standing are eligible to run for this position.

Again, a big congratulations to Randy Dorn, George Dockins, and Judi Owens.  We wish them great success in their new positions and look forward to their leadership and support of classified employees and improvement in education.

Connect with AAEOP on Your Journey to Professional Development

For you, professional involvement and development may mean serving on a committee or as an officer, taking a class, or attending a workshop, meeting, or AAEOP social function.  Regardless of which of these things matches your definition of involvement, consider that whether or not you have made a step on your journey to professional development this year or not, you can take a step today!  Look at the list of opportunities being offered by AAEOP (and/or WAEOP and NAEOP) and decide what action you will take to actively involve yourself in your professional association.  It is never too late to put your best foot forward and become a member of your state and national professional association.  If you are not currently a member of WAEOP and/or NAEOP, the following information should make you want to “step right up” and join today.  Check out news and upcoming events (or the recap of recent events) to see how AAEOP members are involved in the associations established exclusively for educational office professionals.

NAEOP (National Association of Educational Office Professionals) is the “top of the line” national organization established specifically for educational office professionals (school secretaries) throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada.  Membership in this association is significant of your true professionalism.  NAEOP was founded as the National Association of School Secretaries.  NAEOP paved the way by making a name change that reflected not only a change in times, but more accurately recognized the level of professionalism of employees in educational offices.

Benefits of NAEOP membership include:

  • car rental discounts,
  • various insurances,
  • the quarterly NAEOP Magazine,
  • an opportunity for scholarships (member, dependent, and student),
  • enrollment in the Professional Standards Program (PSP),
  • awarding of PSP certificates,
  • workshop and conference opportunities, and
  • a networking system that spans the U.S. and Canada.

In order to apply and qualify for the PSP program, membership in NAEOP is required.  Membership in NAEOP is only $45 a year.  For this fee, new members receive a $1,000 dismemberment insurance policy for the first year with the option for the member to renew the policy on their own (at his/her expense).

WAEOP (Washington Association of Educational Office Professionals) was organized over 50 years ago by school district secretaries who wanted their own PROFESSIONAL association.  Over the years, WAEOP has grown significantly and has changed in a number of ways (including changing the association name from Washington Association of Educational Secretaries).

The state-level association offers several learning events throughout the year.  You can choose from Spring Conference, Fall Institute, Leadership Training, or one of several Professional Development Program workshops offered throughout the state.  PDP workshops are generally hosted by an area director (Auburn is in area 7, our area director is Paula Jo Brave).  The area directors host at least one workshop in their area annually and it is nice to be able to attend a WAEOP-sponsored workshop close to home.  If you have an idea for a PDP workshop you would like offered in area 7, contact Paula Jo.  Area directors, like members of the AAEOP professional development and workshop committee, appreciate your suggestions for workshop topics and/or presenters.

You can be a member of your state-level professional association for only $35 per year.  Go the the WAEOP website to download a membership form.  When you submit your membership form, indicate that you were referred through the AAEOP website.
